4 Tips on Writing Your Own Lyrics

  1. Learn from Musicians

Listen to your favorite songs.  Reflect on the words and how they piece themselves together in your mind.  You can go online or buy books that contain lyrical content and simply ready and study how they are structured.  It’s one thing to listen and also another thing to break down the actual writing.  This will help you understand structure on a deeper level when it comes to writing your own songs.
  2. Music Software

Getting familiar with and using music software is a great ear opener if you are committing yourself to writing lyrical content.  Understanding how to get sounds, riffs, and beats out of your head and into the world by using software will strengthen your writer’s growth when it comes to feeling the rhythm of creating songs.
  3. Music Inspiration

Finding inspiration to write lyrics doesn’t always come easy.  You need to have a way of working, a process that will help open up your senses to creating words.  Sometimes it can be taking a walk, reading a book, listening to other music or simply having a conversation…whatever it may be, there is always a way to trigger an idea for a song if you are open to it.
  4. Have Fun

One of the most important elements to writing lyrics is simply to have a good time!  Having fun and enjoying the craft and time it takes to write a song should be something you relish doing. There is frustration at times but if you are passionate about writing songs, the desire will always outweigh the obstacles as long as you remind yourself to have fun with it.
